THE PROJECT: COMBINING TWO APARTMENTS INTO A SINGLE MODERN HOME

A couple purchased the unit adjoining their Riverdale condo with the intention of combining the two apartments into a single home. They wanted a modern, open, energy-efficient home with space for their three children as well as a guest area for parents and other out-of-town visitors.

DESIGNING A SOLUTION

TNB managed every aspect of the project, handling design, construction, and administration, ensuring that all codes were met and all design plans were implemented according to specifications, working around existing plumbing lines and other building systems to seamlessly combine the units. We shepherded the project through two contractors and ultimately finished renovation of the kitchen ourselves when the second contractor failed to complete it. We also helped address concerns about the project from the client’s neighbor, who happened to be the condo board president.

THE RESULT

The two units were combined masterfully, giving the impression of a space that had been designed as one from the outset. We created a single large, bright apartment with plenty of room for the family and their guests along with extra storage space and energy-saving features like a sophisticated LED lighting system and energy-efficient appliances. The combined apartment featured a new kitchen and dining suite with views into the living area, a family guest suite with a bathroom, a new master bedroom suite, and bedrooms for each child, including one with a private shower.
