THE PROJECT: TURNING A FORMER PIZZERIA INTO A SOUTHERN-STYLE SMOKEHOUSE

TNB’s task in this project for an Upper West Side barbecue spot was to create a space that would both house its operations and establish its brand as a southern-style smokehouse. The design needed to help drive sales while being easily replicable to allow for expansion.

DESIGNING A SOLUTION

The restaurant didn’t house an actual smoker, so we used an epoxy floor, decorative firewood, corrugated aluminum and reclaimed barnwood siding to give the space a rustic smokehouse feel while being careful not to veer into kitsch. The basement service and storage areas didn’t need to be moved, which let us gut only the main street-level space, reducing the cost of the job.

THE RESULT

Our renovation turned this former Upper West Side pizzeria into a southern smokehouse, providing strong branding and a template for future locations. Design decisions like placing beer at the front of the room for easy access helped drive sales, while our ability to use the service and storage areas as they were kept expenses low.
